The average pharmacy will charge a $10 copay for a prescription drug, a new company says.
Crestor, the brand name for a popular cholesterol-lowering drug, is the latest in a growing list of health and wellness drugmakers to take the cost of the drug out of the hands of consumers.
The move opens the door to a generic version of Crestor, the blockbuster cholesterol-lowering drug that generated $4.3 billion in sales last year.
The drug is also among the top-selling drugs on the market. In a report on Tuesday, AstraZeneca said it had about 15 million prescriptions written by people who used Crestor last year, up from about 50 million a year earlier.
The company said it expects the cost to rise about 20 percent annually, about 3 to 5 percent below the cost of the drug, but it is not forecasting that growth will be limited by safety.
Sales of Crestor, the drug’s generic equivalent, shot up about 9 percent to $9.9 billion last year, according to data from the National Institute of Health. It was the most expensive drug on the market, but AstraZeneca’s own analysis said that is partly because of its low price.
“We’re not predicting any of that,” said AstraZeneca sales analyst Michael Cohen, “and we’re not anticipating any.”
The company’s analysis of the company’s data showed that Crestor is more expensive than the comparable drug, statins, which include Crestor and simvastatin. And the new study has also said that Crestor is cheaper than simvastatin.
In the new analysis, the company says it’s not expecting increased growth in sales, and it expects sales to increase at a rate of 1.3 percent per year.

The company said that it would not be able to predict which company will be involved in its research, but has said that it’s likely to try to develop and use more research.
“We’re confident that there will be a large number of people who would like to take it on a daily basis and we are very confident that we’re going to do that,” said Dr. Mark J. LeClair, president and chief executive officer of AstraZeneca.
